GOMUKH THEMES
Water and Sanitation

The main cause of disease in rural areas is poor quality of drinking water and practically non-existent sanitation facilities. Therefore, along with its soil and water conservation activities, Gomukh conducts the following activities for improving water quality and general hygiene in rural areas:

  • training workshops on drinking water treatment (purification) at household level,
  • encouraging people to construct low-cost toilets,
  • awareness programmes on solid waste management,
  • awareness regarding cleanliness at individual level in households, at collective level in the village, and collaborative (multi-village) level in the village surroundings.
At present, Gomukh is conducting the following projects for drinking water supply schemes and sanitation in various districts of Maharashtra:
  1. Jalswaraj Project (Thane district) Gomukh is working with 33 grampanchayats in Thane district. The basic aim of the project is to provide quality drinking water supply to villagers and create awareness regarding the need for toilets and motivate them to construct toilets. Two villages from the work area have received the Nirmal Gram Puraskar awarded by Govt. of Maharashtra.


  2. Jalswaraj Project (Sindhudurg district) Gomukh is working with 10 grampanchyats in Sindhudurg district. Awareness generation and training programs regarding water purification and family health & hygiene were completed and the construction of water supply scheme is in progress.


  3. Jalswaraj Project (Kolhapur district) Gomukh is working with 10 Grampanchayat in Kolhapur district. Construction of water supply scheme is in the final stage and awareness generation and training programs for income generation activities have been completed. 100 % toilet construction is completed in all the villages. All 10 villages have received the Nirmal Gram Puraskar awarded by the Govt. of Maharashtra.


  4. National Awareness Generation Program Gomukh is working with the Ministry of Environment under National Awareness Generation Program. The theme for this year is Solid Waste Management, which involves training programmes on soild waste management, water treatment, etc. in the grampanchayats and schools in the project area.


  5. Apale Pani Project (Pune district) Gomukh is working with 10 grampanchayats in Bhor and Haveli Blocks of Pune district as a support organization with the Water Supply and Sanitation department, Pune Zilla Parishad. Gomukh is working as a Technical Service Provider for 10 villages.
